How I feel about the death penalty; Can’t you just lock these people up instead of killing them? Okay so they killed someone else. Two…

No offense taken. But in the case of say, the man who kidnapped those three women ten years ago (his name always slips my mind), should he be given the right to live even though he tortured them so harshly and killed their babies? And for this there is hard evidence proving that he did so, so why should his life be spared?

Because the way I see it, those criminals are just like animals without a care for the world about human life. To kill them just sets us to their level. I’ve noticed that some people that talk about the death penalty often in a positive way tend to have a really disturbing way of thinking hoping that they get something worse than a needle in their arm. That they should be tortured or something. When reading about the Jodi Arias trial one person even said that they hoped she would executed by means of a botched electrocution like in Green Mile. It like invokes this mob mentality in people and if it were left up to some of them, I wouldn’t be surprised if they would torture the living day lights out of criminals. It’s like they become the animals they tend to abhor. To spare the life of criminals sets us above them. To kill them with such cold indifference and such a strategic premeditation is just so cold, and regardless of what they did, to kill any human is still a murder and I’m just not for that. I see death as an easy way out. To keep them locked up with little to no access to the outside and not being able to do the things that make life enjoyable… for the rest of their lives, i just see that as a more harsh punishment.

But what about the argument that life imprisonment of the sort that you described is “cruel and unusual punishment[s]”? That’s just straight going against the amendments.

No it’s not. That’s how it is right now. They’re not allowed outside without supervision right? I just described how it already is. If you’re in prison you can’t hang out with your friends, you can’t party, you can’t do any of the things you and I might consider ‘fun’. And yet it’s not a violation of the 8th amendment. They’re still allowed some contact with outside people and they’re allowed to go outside and exercise for an hour or so a day and more so than inmates on death row. Just enough where it’s not considered cruel and usual. Actually, some of the people that argue against the Death Penalty consider it a violation of the 8th amendment because of the circumstances which result in botched executions as well as the mental stress that can be caused to inmates on death row because of their severe isolation. In fact, there’s a wonderful documentary on YouTube that describes just how inhumane and cruel killing methods used by the state have been and are. Including the lethal injection which most people speak so highly of. The 8th Amendment discusses cruel and usual punishments as well as excessive bail but we’re not talking about that lol, but yeah, life in prison is not inhumane or a violation of the 8th amendment. To me, Death Row and the Death Penalty are more so.
